Dr. Doherty's dissertation work from UC Davis in the lab of Dr. Peter Beal developed a chemical modification that is now part of the lead molecules in clinical trials directed by ProQR Therapeutics. "Recently, ProQR Therapeutics, a biotech company based in the Netherlands that Beal’s team works closely with, reported positive results from a Phase 1 study that used RNA-based editing to reduce toxic bile acid accumulation in the liver, an underlying driver of cholestatic liver diseases."      This is an exciting milestone for RNA editing therapeutics, and an example of RNA chemistry translating into real clinical impact.
